Nail Salons: Hit or Miss?

One of the best ways to treat yourself this summer is to get a pedicure. Did you know pedicures are enjoyable for everyone? Many nail salons offer polish-optional pedicures that allow folks to get all the benefits of a pedicure without the colored nails. Regardless of whether or not you choose to indulge in colored nail polish, it’s a good idea to do some research on your chosen nail salon before going in for your appointment. Not all nail salons are created equal, and some will have you paying to pamper yourself but you wind up with an infection! Here are some tips and tricks on how to tell if your nail salon is a hit or miss:

DO THEY HAVE COMFORTABLE SEATING?

A comfortable seat to sit in during your pedicure is important. Straining to keep your legs up or hold your foot in a certain way for your pedicurist can irritate pre-existing issues, like plantar fasciitis, and strain your muscles.

ARE THEIR TOOLS REUSABLE? IF NOT, HOW ARE THEY STERILIZED?

Reusable tools are the ideal scenario when it comes to foot and ankle health. It’s the most secure way to reassure their clients that avoiding the spread of bacteria that cause infections is important to them.

HOW DO THEY CLEAN THEIR TUBS? ARE THEIR TUBS COVERED IN PLASTIC?

Tools aren’t the only thing that can carry and hold on to infection-causing bacteria. Bacteria can hold on to the porous surfaces of tubs from their last bath and easily meet your feet where you might have any cuts or scrapes.

ARE THEIR PEDICURISTS RECEPTIVE TO GENTLE HANDLING?

One of the most important things to consider with your new pedicurist is how receptive they are to handling your pedicure gently. If your toenails or cuticles are cut too far back, or you have a sensitive spot on foot (like a neuroma).
