What Are Your 2021 Foot Health Resolutions?
Here we are at the end of a year in which personal health was at the forefront of America’s minds. We all learned to take steps to protect ourselves from COVID-19 by wearing masks, remaining socially distant, and washing our hands well and often. With a vaccine on the horizon, here is a suggestion from Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver to keep it up, and to make room in your health consciousness for your feet, ankles, and lower legs in 2021. Here are three suggestions for resolutions you can adopt for the year ahead:
Prevent falls that can cause foot and ankle injuries. Keep a tidy home, free from clutter on the floor. Make sure the edges of area rugs are secured. Use the handrails when on stairs. If you’re heading outside this winter, be sure to wear a pair of warm, insulated boots that offer a thick lug sole for traction on snow and ice.
Pay attention to your feet. Take foot pain seriously, particularly pain that results from changes to the foot shape and heel pain at its worse when you first get out of bed in the morning. It can be a sign of plantar fasciitis, common inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot. Your podiatrist can treat it with numerous non-invasive options, including a prescription for custom orthotics to provide cushioning and support.
Did you skip your annual visit with your podiatrist in 2020? Preventative podiatric care is important for men, women, and children of every age. Still, it is particularly critical for people living with diabetes or other illnesses that pose risks to foot health.
