Your Feet: Getting to Know the Basics
It’s easy to take your feet and ankles for granted when they’re healthy, but this part of your body is among nature’s most complex structures. How much do you know about your feet? Here are four facts that Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver want you to keep in mind:
Combined, there are 52 bones in your feet and ankles. This is one quarter of all the bones in your body! Many of these bones are tiny and they are easily broken when foot and ankle injuries occur, especially after a fall. Treat foot pain at home with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and call your podiatrist if this doesn’t resolve the issue in 24 hours.
Many illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, thyroid disorders, and diabetes, first appear as changes in the feet. Be especially alert to swelling, redness, bluish skin tone, and tingling or numbness, and report these symptoms to your podiatrist right away.
Your choice of footwear will affect your foot health. Save those high heels for special occasions or, even better, retire them completely. They contribute to issues including bunions and hammertoes. For everyday use, opt for a pair of sensible, comfortable shoes with a wide toe box and a low, chunky heel. If it’s difficult for you to wear shoes comfortably, your podiatrist can help with a wide range of approaches including custom orthotics for cushioning and support.
Many people believe foot pain is unavoidable as they age. This is not true! Your podiatrist is a medical expert and can diagnose and treat the source of your discomfort.
