Keep Feet Feeling Great in the New Year

Many patients are thinking toward 2023 and making resolutions for improved health and wellness. What about your feet? How are you going to keep them feeling great in the New Year? Here are some ideas. How many can you implement?

Maintain a healthy weight. Did you gain a few pounds over the holidays? Now is the time to shed them, before they can stress the bones, muscles, and tendons of the feet, ankles, and lower legs.

Choose shoes with care. Invest in a couple of comfortable, sensible pairs of shoes for everyday use. These should be made of a flexible, breathable material that allows for air flow. They should offer a wide, roomy toe box that doesn't restrict movement or squeeze toes. A rubber sole and low heel will maximize stability and minimize the risk of falls that can lead to foot and ankle injuries. Rotate your everyday shoes. Avoid wearing the same pair two days in a row so that they can air out. If you like to wear fashionable high-heeled shoes, save them for special occasions. Wear your shoes or boots to the event, and change footwear when you arrive and depart.

Trim toenails regularly with a clipper. Be sure to trim straight across. Rounding the corners can lead to ingrown toenails. If you enjoy an occasional salon pedicure, bring your own tools to avoid infections including toenail fungus.

Stretching will keep muscles flexible. You can try some stretches, including pointing and flexing the toes and ankles, at home, or join a gentle yoga or tai chi class for community.

Stay hydrated inside and out. Drink plenty of water. Avoid dry skin and heel cracks by applying moisturizing lotion to your feet daily.

Practice excellent hygiene. Wash your feet with warm water and soap daily and dry them well, especially between the toes.
