As we head into fall, your favorite shoe store is probably trying to clear the summer sandals off the shelves to make room for fall shoes and winter boots. It’s a great time to score a great pair of sandals! You still have several weeks, or even months to wear them. Plus, they’ll be in great shape for next year, or even for your upcoming vacation.

Keep this in mind, however: if your new sandals aren’t comfortable, they really aren’t a bargain at all. How can you make sure that you’re picking the perfect pair?

Here are some tips from Dr. James M. McKee to keep in mind as you go shopping:

  • Be careful and be sure to choose the right size. You might think that goes without saying, but foot length and width changes as you age. If it’s been more than a year since your feet were measured, ask your salesperson to verify that your current size is what you remember.

  • Skip those flat-bottomed flip-flops. Long-term use can cause injuries including stress fractures. For maximum comfort, your new sandals should offer arch support.

  • Look for a pair of sandals with straps on top and at the back of the foot. This will keep your shoes firmly attached to your feet and will allow for a customizable fit.

  • Choose sandals that are made of leather or another breathable fabric. This will keep moisture away from your feet and reduce your risk of athlete’s foot and other fungal infection.

Of course, the best way to enjoy your new sandals in to make sure that your feet, ankles and lower legs are in great health and the best way to do that is with regular visits to your podiatrist.
