Three Reasons to Leave Your High Heels Behind

With offices and restaurants opening from coast to coast, many Podiatry Group of Annapolis, P.A. patients are saying goodbye to the comfy clothes they wore for months at home and are enjoying the opportunity to get dressed up for a day at work or an evening out on the town. Unfortunately, for many men and women, that also means returning to rigid shoes, often with high heels. These shoes are dangerous to foot health. Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver recommend they be saved for special occasions or retired entirely. Do you know about these three painful foot deformities?

  1. Haglund’s deformity: This is a hard bump that forms on the back of the heel bone, attaching to the Achilles tendon.

  2. Bunions: When the bones of the foot shift out of place and a bony protrusion develops where the foot should be well-aligned, this is a bunion. It is most common to find a bunion at the point where the big toe meets the rest of the foot, but they can also develop on any of the toes. These smaller bunions are known as bunionettes or tailor’s bunions.

  3. Hammertoes: Often caused by shoes with narrow, cramped toe boxes that squeeze the toes together, a hammertoe develops when the tendon that connects the toe to the foot shortens. You might notice a toe that straightens and won’t curl, curls and won’t straighten, or rises up and out of line with the others.

All three of these conditions are characterized by redness, swelling, discomfort, and difficulty wearing shoes, standing, walking, or running comfortably. If you experience any of these symptoms, a visit with your podiatrist is appropriate. With years of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is the best-qualified medical specialist to examine, diagnose, and treat this part of your body.
