It’s not uncommon for patients to arrive at Podiatry Group of Annapolis, P.A.’s office suffering from a painful bunion or hammertoe, believing there’s nothing that can be done to relieve their discomfort. That’s simply not the case. Expert foot doctors like Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver can examine, diagnose, and treat all manner of foot-related illnesses, injuries, and deformities.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is a foot deformity that typically occurs at the joint where the big toe meets the rest of the foot. The bones in this joint shift out of place and a hard bump develops on the inner edge of the foot. This is a bunion. Other symptoms include redness and swelling at the joint and pain making it hard to stand, walk, run, or wear shoes comfortably. Be alert for these signs and report them, or any change in foot shape, to your podiatrist right away as you might have a bunion. If you notice these symptoms on a smaller toe, that might be a bunionette, also known as a tailor’s bunion.

What is a Hammertoe?

The delicate bones of your toes are connected to the muscles by tendons and ligaments. If those soft tissues contract, they can pull on the toes and create a deformity. A toe might rise up and out of line with the others, curl and refuse to straighten, or even straighten permanently without the ability to curl when necessary. A hammertoe typically occurs on one of the smaller toes.

How Can Your Podiatrist Help?

Your foot doctor will bring years of specialized education and experience to your foot deformity, and will be able to treat your bunion or hammertoe with a wide range of options, including over-the-counter and prescription medication for pain and swelling, custom orthotics for cushioning and support, new footwear, physical therapy, and even surgery, but only when necessary.
