Four Tips to Help You Keep Healthy From Head to Toes

It’s been months now. We’ve all been doing everything we can to reduce the transmission of the novel coronavirus, the virus that causes the dangerous disease dubbed COVID-19. We’re staying home and wearing gloves and masks to reduce the likelihood of becoming infected when we need to leave.

Those are important steps to flatten the curve, but it’s also important to remember that, even as we remain socially isolated, we must be proactive not only about coronavirus, but about our overall health and wellness. What should you do to protect your health while you’re at home? Here are four tips from Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver:

  1. Begin with a healthy diet. Your preferred grocery store might not have everything you want in stock when you visit. Instead of viewing that as a challenge, reframe your thinking to see it as an opportunity to try foods that you might not otherwise choose. Stick to fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This is important for everyone, but it’s critical for people with illnesses that are affected by diet, such as hypertension or diabetes.

  2. Take good care of your skin. We’re all washing hands more often. Hopefully, you’re also taking care of your feet by washing them daily with antibacterial soap and drying them well, especially between the toes. The problem is that frequent washing can be hard on skin. The resulting dryness can lead to painful cracks, especially on the knuckles and at heels. Be sure to moisturize well after you wash or bathe.

  3. Practice good “sleep hygiene.” Try to go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time every day.

  4. Stay connected to maintain good mental health. Take a (socially-distanced) walk with a friend. Set up a phone call or video chat with far-away family members. Join an online class. Those connections can help you more hopeful and less stressed.
