Three Steps Toward a Healthy Summer

The peak of the pandemic seems to have passed, and the weather is warmer. Stay-at-home orders are expiring from coast to coast and businesses are reopening. Things are feeling a bit safer out there, aren’t they? Still, though, it’s important to remember that the novel coronavirus is still out there and COVID-19, the disease it causes, remains a real risk. Even as you relax and enjoy the season to come, it’s essential to continue to take steps to remain safe. Here are three tips from Anne Arundel County podiatrists, Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver:

  1. Know your COVID-19 risk and make smart choices. If you are over 65, or if you have an underlying condition such as asthma, hypertension, or diabetes, your risk of a serious case of the illness resulting in hospitalization or even death is increased. Maintain a social distance of six feet or more and take advantage of early shopping hours to reduce your exposure.

  2. Wear a mask when you go out in public. This is the best way to prevent spreading the virus, which passes from person to person in airborne droplets. You can get disposable masks at many pharmacies or grocery stores. If you prefer a reusable fabric mask, be sure to purchase or make several, so that you can wash them between uses and always have a clean one handy.

  3. Make handwashing a habit. Wash hands with plenty of soap and warm water several times each day, especially when entering your home, after using the bathroom, and before preparing food.
