Wash Up on Global Handwashing Day
This Friday is Global Handwashing Day. Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver and the Podiatry Group of Annapolis, P.A. staff will be taking steps to ensure good health for themselves and their patients that day in the same way they do every day: by washing their hands frequently. The same basic step can help protect you and your family from a wide range of illnesses, including common colds, flu, and skin infections such as plantar warts, athlete's foot, and toenail fungus, but only if you know when and how to wash! Here are some tips for you from our experienced doctors:
When to Wash Your Hands
You should wash your hands often throughout the day, at times including:
Before and after preparing food, especially raw meat.
Before and after eating.
After using the toilet.
Before and after helping a family member use the toilet.
Before and after changing a diaper.
Before and after helping someone care for a wound or injury.
After petting or playing with your pet or managing its waste.
After taking out the trash.
How to Wash Your Hands
Now that you know when to wash your hands let’s talk about how. A quick rinse with cold water and a wipe on your pants really won’t do the job. Instead:
Wet your hands thoroughly with warm water.
Lather with plenty of soap. Be sure to wash the palms and backs of your hands, between the fingers, and under the nails. It should take at least 20 seconds to do. How long is that? It’s about the same amount of time you need to sing “Happy birthday” to yourself twice.
Rinse well and dry with a clean paper towel.
Antibacterial hand sanitizer is not a substitute for soap and water, but it's better than nothing in a pinch. Squirt away!
