Take a Hike to Improve Foot and Ankle Health
As the summer reaches its conclusion and fall is upon us, many Podiatry Group of Annapolis, P.A. patients, are taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and beautiful weather to enjoy the great outdoors. It’s a great season to go for a walk in a local park or take a day hike. Are you aware these activities offer benefits to foot and ankle health? Here are three things that Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver want you to know:
1. Walking is excellent for feet, ankles, and lower legs. With every step, you support your body weight, and this is the very best thing you can do to protect yourself from osteoporosis, a dangerous weakening of the bones throughout the body. Over one-quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet, and they are particularly vulnerable to fractures and other injuries.
2. When you exercise, you take an essential step toward maintaining healthy body weight. It is critical to foot and ankle health, as excess weight and obesity put added stress on the feet' delicate arches and soft tissues. Pack a healthy picnic lunch based on produce, lean protein, and whole grains for added benefit. Be sure you bring plenty of water on your adventure as well.
3. Keep feet safe from blisters and other minor injuries. Be sure the shoes are in good condition. Wear cushioned socks. Create a small "foot first aid kit" containing moleskin, bandages, and antibiotic ointments and bring it with you.
Be sure feet, ankles, and lower legs are in good health and ready to take you on your next adventure, whatever that might be.
