Has the Shape of Your Foot Changed?
It’s not uncommon for vigilant patients to visit Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver to report they’ve noticed a change in the shape of their feet. Sometimes, especially as you get older, things shift, and a foot deformity can occur. Two of the most common are bunions and hammertoes. Fortunately, your podiatrist can carefully examine your feet and ankles, determine the cause of the transformation, and provide appropriate treatment.
A bunion is a foot deformity that develops when bones shift out of place, most commonly at the joint where the big toe meets the inner edge of the foot. Bunions can develop on other, smaller toes as well. These are called “bunionettes” or “tailor’s bunions.” How can you spot a bunion? Be on the lookout for a hard-bony protrusion, possibly accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty wearing shoes and engaging in exercise or daily activities.
What’s a hammertoe? A hammertoe develops when the tendons of a toe shorten. It can happen on any toe. Be sure to take note of a toe that rises and out of line with the others. It might be difficult to change the level of its straightness or curl. The toe will probably hurt, and it might be difficult to stand, walk, or run.
Men and women of all ages can develop foot deformities. Get familiar with the appearance of your feet. If you notice a change, reach out to your foot doctor. With years of specialized education and experience, including a hospital residency, your podiatrist is a medical expert and the best-qualified professional to help you with the examination, diagnosis, and treatment.
