Keeping Feet Safe and Healthy in Winter Months
Winter’s cold, snow, and ice pose unique challenges to foot health. It’s important that you take some simple steps and develop some common-sense habits to keep your feet safe during this time of year. Here are some tips to keep you feeling great:
Reduce your risk of uncomfortable chilblains and dangerous frostbite by keeping your feet warm. Wear woolen socks and insulated, waterproof boots. Don’t go barefoot, even indoors. This is especially important if you have a condition such as diabetes that impacts circulation and limits sensation in your feet.
Practice good hygiene. Wash feet daily with antibacterial soap and dry them well. Damp feet provide a hospitable environment for the germs that cause fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. If wearing boots makes your feet get sweaty, change your socks when you get home. Pack a spare pair in your bag in case you need them when you arrive at the office.
Avoid foot and ankle injuries. Invest in an appropriate pair of winter shoes or boots. In addition to being warm, your boots should offer thick lug soles to improve traction in snow and ice.
Prevent painful skin cracks. Winter air lacks moisture and is tough on skin. Apply moisturizer twice daily, especially at the heels. If dry skin is severe, try moisturizing at bedtime and wearing a pair of cotton socks overnight.
Whether it’s a seasonal issue or not, if you have any concerns about the health or well-being of your feet, ankles, or lower legs, the first step on the road to recovery is a visit with your foot doctor.
