Could Your Symptoms Be Phlebitis?
Do you know the basics of how your circulatory system works? Your heart pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout the body via the arteries and then, after the oxygen has been used, your veins return it to the heart. Sounds simple, right? Not exactly. Returning the blood to the heart from the extremities is hard work, especially for the veins in your legs which are often fighting gravity to get the job done. One-way valves help. When the muscles in the legs are at rest, they stay closed. When the muscles apply pressure by gently squeezing the veins, the valves open.
When these valves fail, it becomes difficult for the blood to return to the heart from the legs and feet. This is varicosity. Blood clots can then occur. In the deep veins, this is called a Deep Vein Thrombosis, and it is a dangerous situation requiring immediate emergency medical attention. In the superficial veins – the ones closer to the surface of the skin – these clots cause inflammation of the veins called phlebitis.
SYMPTOMS OF SUPERFICIAL PHLEBITIS INCLUDE PAIN, REDNESS, WARMTH, AND SWELLING IN THE LEG.
If you suspect that phlebitis is developing, you should see your podiatrist right away. She or he will examine your feet and legs and accurately diagnose your symptoms. The good news is that, if your doctor diagnoses superficial phlebitis, it is not a serious condition. It can be treated with simple approaches including rest, elevation, anti-inflammatory medications, and warm compresses over the affected area.
