Common Foot Problems in Athletes

Almost all sports activities require explosive foot movements for optimum performance. This is the reason why athletes in particular are at high risk for foot injuries. The feet also work as load bearing structures responsible for supporting our body’s weight when walking, standing or running.  When feet are exposed to stresses beyond their normal capacity foot injuries are sure to occur.

Sever’s Disease

This is a foot condition found in child athletes. Heel pain occurs when the underdeveloped heels are subjected to stress before it is fully mature. The heel growth plate is one of the last feet structures to fully develop. However, this disappear when the heels become fully developed. Children who participate in sports at an early age are advised to wear shoes that provide cushion and extra support to the heels.

Ankle Sprains

The ankles are constantly exposed to twists and turns demanding strength and flexibility. However, injury can occur when this is stretched beyond its limits. Simple ways to prevent this includes warming up or stretch exercises to loosen the ankles. The good thing about ankle sprains is that it could be managed by simply resting the feet. Over the counter medications are also available for immediate pain relief and reducing inflammation.

Stress Fractures

A stress fracture can develop as bones are exposed to constant stress from sports activities. The danger of a stress fracture however, is it remains virtually hard to detect unlike a total fracture. This can remain hidden until the bones totally break off.  This often occurs in load bearing bones such as the heel, ankle, navicula or metatarsal.

Regular visits to a podiatrist can help detect possible stress fractures. This can also make treatments much easier.

Tingling Feet

A tingling sensation in the feet can be caused by nerve damage or poor circulation. This can cause discomfort and affect an athlete’s performance. Athletes are required to be at the prime of their health and any condition that can affect their performance should be treated immediately.

Soreness in the feet are normal especially after a long day at the gym or running. Consult a podiatrist for more information on proper foot care and how to avoid foot injuries.
