Flat Foot and Swelling During Pregnancy

Flat foot or swelling is a common occurrence in pregnant women and should not be a cause of major concern. This is because these foot conditions disappear after pregnancy. However, no matter how “common” these foot conditions are during pregnancy, it is still something that can be avoided.

Pregnancy brings many physical changes to a woman’s body.  These are largely the reason for the development of foot conditions in pregnancy. Changes in hormone levels and the weight of the developing baby are the main culprits. But if these foot conditions persists after pregnancy, a visit to a podiatrist could help identify if it is being caused by a foot injury or an underlying disease.

Foot Swelling

Foot swelling is a condition commonly found in pregnant women. This is caused by the increase in fluid content in feet tissues. Fluid increase is due to the higher volume of blood circulating in the boy. This is in response to the additional requirements of oxygen and nutrients by the mother and growing baby. Swelling is usually found in the foot because fluids naturally collected at this area due to gravity.

Flat Feet

Pregnancy causes a change in hormone levels. Some of these hormones are responsible for relaxing muscles and ligaments in the feet.  Flat feet can happen when women lose muscle tone or strength in the feet.

Another cause of flat feet in pregnant women is the additional weight of carrying the growing baby. The feet even before pregnancy is already responsible for our load bearing activities. The feet, ligaments and muscles are only capable of carrying up to a certain point and anything above this can cause flat feet.

Women might be surprised that their old shoes are unable to fit comfortably during pregnancy. This is especially true for women with flat feet. However, their feet returns to its normal size after giving birth.
