Do You Have a Bunion?
Have you ever wondered about that bony bump at the base of your big toe? It's probably a bunion. If a bunion does not cause any pain or discomfort, then there is no need for treatment. However, in many cases, bunions can become painful and uncomfortable.
Signs and symptoms of bunions:
Bump on the outside of the base of your big toe
Thickening of the skin at the base of your big toe
Corns and calluses
Red, sore and swelled area around the joint of your big toe
Limited motion of your big toe
Pain
Identifying the early signs and symptoms of bunions can help delay or even prevent symptoms from getting worse.
Causes:
Foot injuries
Hereditary traits
Arthritis
Congenital defects
Heels (though experts are still debating on this one)
Treatment:
Soak affected foot on warm water or apply a heating pad. In some people though, pain and discomfort can be relieved by ice packs.
Maintain a normal weight.
Change your shoes to a well-fitted one where there is a wide area for your toes.
Have a prescribed or even an over-the-counter medication for pain such as Tylenol or Advil.
Make use of shoe inserts as they will help in the correct position and pressure on your foot.
Buy a mole-skin or a gel-filled pad to shield the bunion.
Splint, tape or pad your foot in a normal position with the help of a doctor.
For women, avoid high-heeled shoes.
