Psoriasis Can Plague the Feet
Do you remember the old commercial that talked about “the heartbreak of psoriasis?” If you’re familiar with this condition, you probably think of it as a skin issue that is commonly found on the elbows or knees. But did you know that psoriasis can also occur on the feet? It can, and it’s often very uncomfortable when it does.
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. Most commonly, it manifests as “plaques” -- red, raised patches covered in a layer of dead skin. People who are affected by skin plaques report that they are itchy and uncomfortable. They are also embarrassing to many people. As many as 7.5 million Americans have it to one degree or another and more women than men have this condition.
Two kinds of psoriasis occur on the feet. In addition to the typical form that causes the plaques discussed above, there is another, more serious variety called palmoplantar pustulosis. This manifestation of psoriasis not only causes plaques, but also leads to the formation of painful pustules on the skin.
Doctors have not pinpointed one particular trigger for psoriasis outbreaks, but they do have suggestions to keep your psoriasis at bay:
Keep feet safe and healthy. Other illnesses and foot and ankle injuries can exacerbate psoriasis. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes that allow feet to “breathe.”
Eat a healthy diet and limit your consumption of alcohol.
Stop smoking. Not only is this good for your overall health and wellness, but smoking is also a psoriasis trigger.
If you suspect that you are noticing psoriasis plaques on your feet, schedule a visit with your podiatrist right away. Your foot doctor is a medical expert, and the best-qualified professional to help you manage this condition. They will have numerous treatment options available, including:
